California gas pipeline explosion, fire injure up to 15 people

A firefighter watches the blaze after a gas line exploded near FresnoBy Sharon Bernstein SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Reuters) - A construction crew on Friday accidentally ruptured a natural gas transmission line in Fresno, California, sparking an explosion and fire that injured up to 15 people, four of them critically, officials said. The 12-inch (30-cm) pipeline, belonging to Pacific Gas & Electric Corp , was struck by a backhoe near state Highway 99, unleashing a fireball that injured members of the construction team and a jail inmate crew nearby, Fresno Fire Department spokesman Peter Martinez said. One worker in critical condition was flown to hospital by helicopter, and 13 or 14 others were taken to hospitals for evaluation and treatment of injuries after the pipeline was ruptured at about 2:30 p.m., Martinez added. Four of the injured were taken to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, and two more were taken to the burn unit there, said hospital spokeswoman Mary Lisa Russell, adding that four were in critical condition and two serious.

Big turnout on Record Store Day shows rebirth of vinyl

A customer peruses the vinyl for sale in the music shop Record Collector as employee Joe Blanchard (R) speaks to a customer on the phone ahead of Record Store Day in Sheffield, England on April 17, 2015Music lovers lined up for blocks and sellers reported bumper trade on Record Store Day, a sign of the rebirth of vinyl in one bright point for the long-troubled recording industry. Some 3,000 independent stores Saturday in nearly two dozen countries put out new and reissued records specially for the day, which was conceived in 2007 to support businesses facing a twin onslaught from instant digital music and corporate chains. To mark the occasion, rock giants the Foo Fighters -- accustomed to filling arenas -- played a concert for 150 people at a store in a strip mall of tiny Niles, Ohio, near the home of the grandmother of frontman Dave Grohl. Third Man Records, a Nashville store run by rocker Jack White, put on sale a reissue of Elvis Presley's rare first single, "My Happiness," in packaging resembling the 1953 original.

Officers kill knife-wielding man near St. Louis, police say
(Reuters) - A 23-year-old African-American man who barricaded himself in his mother's house in a St. Louis suburb was shot and killed by police when he rushed at them with a knife in one hand and a Bible in the other, authorities said on Saturday. The St. Louis County police chief described the encounter as one that left his officers with no choice but to open fire. One prominent case was in another St. Louis suburb, Ferguson. Unlike those two cases, the latest shooting followed a tense, three-hour standoff in Jennings, which is located between Ferguson and St. Louis.
