Father of Virginia TV reporter slain on air vows to fight for gun control

Chris Hurst, a journalist at the station and boyfriend of killed journalist Alison Parker pauses for a moment as Jeff Marks, general manager for WDBJ7 looks onBy Ian Simpson WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The father of a Virginia journalist killed in an on-air shooting said on Thursday he would become a crusader for gun control, but analysts said there was little likelihood of legislation on the federal level any time soon, despite changes in some states. Two journalists, reporter Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward of Roanoke CBS affiliate WDBJ7, were shot during a live interview on Wednesday by a disgruntled former station employee who later killed himself. Parker's father, Andy Parker, urged state and federal lawmakers to take action on gun control, especially to keep firearms out of the hands of people who were mentally unstable.

South Sudan rebels, army again accuse each other of attacks after pact

South Sudan's rebel leader Riek Machar prepares to address a news conference during the peace signing meeting in Ethiopia's capital Addis AbabaBy Denis Dumo JUBA (Reuters) - South Sudanese rebels and the army have accused each other for the second time this week of attacks, this time barely a day after President Salva Kiir signed a peace deal that looks increasingly fragile. Rebel leader Riek Machar said that South Sudanese government troops had attacked towns held by the insurgents but army spokesman, Col. Philip Aguer, rejected the accusation and said it was the rebels who had attacked the government soldiers. During the signing ceremony Kiir said the rebels had attacked government troops in the north of the country.

Lockdown lifted after reports of shooting at Georgia's Savannah State University
One person was hospitalized after being shot and wounded near or inside the student union, the Atlanta Journal Constitution newspaper and broadcaster WSBV-TV reported, citing a university official. The campus of the historically black university is in the heart of Savannah, an Atlantic seaport that is Georgia's oldest city and the seat of Chatham County. The Savannah incident came a day after two television journalists were slain by a gunman during a live broadcast in Virginia and about two months after the June 17 fatal shooting of nine parishioners at a landmark African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina.

JoDee Baker, with the Utah Department of Health, speaks during a news briefing Thursday, Aug. 27, 2015, in Salt Lake City. An elderly Utah resident has died after contracting the plague earlier this month, health officials said Thursday, noting it's the state's first recorded death from the disease in over three decades. State and local officials are still trying to determine how the person contracted the disease but believe it might have been spread by a flea or contact with a dead animal, according to the Utah Department of Health.
