Nerves rattled by false reports of U.S. Navy Yard shooter in Washington

Police respond to reported active shooter at Navy Yard: Washington PostA report of a possible gunman, which was later determined to be unfounded, touched off an hours-long lockdown starting at about 7:45 a.m. EDT at the military facility just a mile south of the U.S. Capitol and three miles from the White House. The Navy Yard was the site of a 2013 shooting that left 12 dead. "An employee thought they heard something of concern, they made a call," said Chief Cathy Lanier of the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal health officials have approved a new combination drug for the most common form of cystic fibrosis, the debilitating inherited disease that causes internal mucus buildup, lung infections and early death.

Matt Farr, his brother and their parents woke up to the news and grabbed a change of clothes at about 8:30 a.m. ET before heading to a nearby animal center to drop off their Yorkie dog, Rosie. Farr, 21, said the four Maryville residents would stay in two rooms at a nearby hotel until the evacuation is lifted. "We didn't think we'd be there that long, but now it's starting to look like we may be there for a couple days," he told Reuters via telephone from the animal center.
