One dead, two hurt as vehicle tries to ram U.S. spy agency gates
By Mark Hosenball WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two people tried to run their vehicle through National Security Agency's entrance gates near Washington on Monday before guards shot one of them dead, and the vehicle's second occupant and a police officer were injured, officials said. The two, who were dressed in women's clothes and may be transgender, tried to drive their sport utility vehicle through an entrance gate at the spy agency's Fort Meade, Maryland, headquarters, a senior U.S. official said. The two people in a vehicle "attempted an unauthorized entry at a National Security Agency gate," the NSA said in a statement. The pair failed to follow a police officer's directions to leave the gate area and barriers were put up.
A Spanish hospital said Monday it has successfully carried out the world's most complex face transplant, reconstructing the lower face, neck, mouth, tongue and back of the throat of a man terribly disfigured by disease. A team of 45 physicians, nurses, anaesthesiologists and other health professionals carried out the 27-hour operation in early February at Barcelona's Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, the hospital said in a statement. "This is the first time that a transplant of this complexity is performed in the world," the statement said. The man had been examined in several other hospitals, including the Mayo Clinic and Harvard Medical School in the United States, which had considered him to be inoperable but the Barcelona hospital ruled surgery was his only treatment option.
By Scott Malone BOSTON (Reuters) - The two youngest people killed by the Boston Marathon bombing were torn apart by one of the blasts that ripped through the crowd at the finish line, medical examiners testified on Monday as prosecutors wound up their case against accused bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and defense attorneys began calling witnesses. Massachusetts' Chief Medical Examiner Henry Nields showed the jury 8-year-old Martin Richard’s bloodstained gray New England Patriots T-shirt with holes that correlated with injuries to the child’s torso. On the 15th day of testimony in Tsarnaev's trial at Boston federal court, Nields said a piece of shrapnel appeared to have gone straight through Richard's body. Shrapnel from the same homemade pressure cooker bomb that killed Richard punched through Chinese exchange student Lingzi Lu's legs, causing the 23-year old to bleed to death within minutes, Boston medical examiner Katherine Lindstrom testified.
