Ten years after Katrina, resilient New Orleans honors its victims

A brass band performs in Jackson Square in New Orleans, LouisianaBy Kathy Finn and Edward McAllister NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - From the Lower Ninth Ward to the Super Dome, New Orleans launched a day of events on Saturday to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, paying tribute to its victims and homage to the city's resilience in the face of disaster. The day began with a somber ceremony led by Mayor Mitch Landrieu to remember the 83 "forgotten" victims whose unclaimed bodies now rest in mausoleums at the Hurricane Katrina Memorial, housed in one of the city's historic above-ground cemeteries. Katrina killed more than 1,500 people, mostly in flooding that left 80 percent of New Orleans under water.

Planned Parenthood goes to court to fight funding cuts in Alabama

A Planned Parenthood clinic is seen in Vista, CaliforniaBy Letitia Stein (Reuters) - (This 28 August 2015 story was refiled to add the dropped word "court" in the first paragraph) Planned Parenthood filed a complaint in Alabama federal court on Friday seeking to stop the state from defunding its health clinics after the release of covertly recorded videos attacking the organization's handling of aborted fetal tissue. The reproductive-health organization took similar legal action earlier this week in Louisiana, which also plans to terminate its contract with Planned Parenthood to provide medical services to low-income residents. Planned Parenthood, joined in the suit by the American Civil Liberties Union, said in court filings that Alabama's Republican governor illegally terminated its contract to provide health services under Medicaid, a federal and state healthcare program for the poor.

Construction accident closes down major San Francisco freeway
Emergency work was expected to block off the principal freeway connecting San Francisco to the south for at least 20 hours, after a construction crane crashed into and demolished a tower supporting high-voltage power lines. "All southbound and northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 101 are closed down until possibly 5 p.m. today," Officer Eric Anderson of the California Highway Patrol said on Saturday, warning of significant traffic delays. The crane was being used to construct a new freeway overpass in Burlingame, a suburb south of San Francisco.
