McCarthy, the No. 2 Republican in the House, had competition from more conservative lawmakers who felt marginalized under Boehner's leadership. The election for Speaker was postponed until further notice, House Republican Conference spokesman Nate Hodson said.

Thirty-three people are still missing five days after a catastrophic US air strike on an Afghan hospital, medical charity MSF said Thursday, sparking fears that the death toll may significantly rise. The bombing raid last Saturday killed 12 MSF staff and 10 patients, prompting the charity to close the trauma centre, seen as a lifeline in a war-battered region with scant medical care. "We are still in shock," Doctors Without Borders (MSF) country representative Guilhem Molinie told a press conference in Kabul.
U.S. Air Force airman Spencer Stone, one of the three Americans who thwarted a train attack in France in August, was stabbed in Sacramento early on Thursday and was in stable condition at a California hospital, Air Force officials said. "At approximately 1 a.m., Airman First Class Stone was involved in a stabbing incident in Sacramento," Air Force spokeswoman Rose Richeson said in a statement.
