Arkansas governor seeks fix of religion bill seen as targeting gays

Former Rep. Asa Hutchinson discusses the findings and recommendations of the National School Shield Program in WashingtonBy Steve Barnes LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Reuters) - Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson told lawmakers on Wednesday to revise a bill that rights activists and U.S. businesses said allowed discrimination against gays, and home-state corporate giant Wal-Mart Stores Inc praised his action. The state's Senate took up the challenge late on Wednesday, sending to the House of Representatives legislation that would bring the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) into line with federal statutes. Indiana's governor a day earlier said lawmakers should fix a similar RFRA. In a news conference at the Capitol in Little Rock, Hutchinson, who previously said he would sign the bill, said he was sending the act back to the Republican-controlled legislature to be rewritten so it can better balance tolerance for diversity and protections of religious freedom.

DNA blood test is accurate for detecting Down syndrome

DNA blood test is accurate for detecting Down syndromeA blood test for pregnant mothers that detects an unborn child's DNA is better than standard tests at detecting Down syndrome, and returns fewer false positives, US researchers said Wednesday. The cell-free DNA blood test, which finds small amounts of floating DNA from the fetus in the mother's blood sample, can be given to a woman when she is between 10 and 14 weeks pregnant. Researchers studied nearly 16,000 women, and found that the cell-free DNA blood test correctly identified all 38 fetuses with Down syndrome in the group, said the study in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Patient evaluated for Ebola at Colorado hospital after seeing symptoms
(Reuters) - A patient was being evaluated for Ebola in isolation at a Colorado hospital on Thursday after experiencing symptoms of the disease, health officials said. The patient, who was not identified and was considered low-risk, had recently traveled to an Ebola-affected country and was taken to the Medical Center of the Rockies some 50 miles (80 km) north of Denver on Wednesday evening after falling ill, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment said in a statement. At least 10 people are known to have been treated for Ebola in the United States - four of them diagnosed with the disease on U.S. soil - during a West African epidemic that has killed more than 10,000 people, mostly in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, over the last year.
