U.S. probing Islamic State claims it was behind Texas cartoon attack

The area around a car that was used the previous night by two gunmen is investigated by local police and the FBI in GarlandBy Mark Hosenball and Ian Simpson WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. investigators were looking into claims by the Islamic State that it was behind a failed attack on a Texas exhibit of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad in which two gunmen were killed, but officials said on Tuesday they doubted the militant group's direct involvement. The Syria- and Iraq-based Islamic State (IS) said on its official online radio station that "two soldiers of the caliphate" carried out the attack on Sunday in Garland, a suburb of Dallas.

Greenpeace faces shutdown after India freezes funds in charity crackdown
By Nita Bhalla NEW DELHI (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Greenpeace India is facing imminent closure after authorities froze its bank accounts leaving it with little funds, the environmental group's head said late on Tuesday, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government of "strangulation by stealth". India's home ministry last month blocked foreign funding to the local branch of Greenpeace and suspended its registration for six months. Officials said the charity was misreporting funds and using unaccounted foreign aid to stall development projects. Greenpeace India, which has campaigned against coal mining, genetically modified food and nuclear power projects, rejects the allegations.
In Baltimore, U.S. attorney general pledges to help police reform

A law enforcement officer washes the face of a woman who was affected by pepper spray at the intersection of North and Pennsylvania Avenues in BaltimoreNew U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch on Tuesday met with Baltimore officials and the family of a 25-year-old black man who died in police custody last month and vowed to help the city pursue police reform. The meeting in Baltimore came the week after the city's top prosecutor brought criminal charges against the six officers involved in the April 12 arrest of Freddie Gray, who suffered a spinal injury that led to his death a week later. "We lost a young man's life and it begins to represent so many things." The Justice Department, she said, will work with the city as it seeks to improve its police department. Prosecutor Marilyn Mosby said last week there had been no legal basis for Gray's arrest, which came after he fled from a police officer after making eye contact.
