John Mellencamp, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Warren Haynes will join a slew of country artists at an all-star tribute to Merle Haggard that’s being organized by the late country legend’s family, his friend Willie Nelson and Blackbird Presents. “Sing Me Back Home: The Music of Merle Haggard” will be held April 6 at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena.
The date of the concert is significant because it’s not only the one-year anniversary of Haggard’s passing, but it also would have been his 80th birthday. The show’s lineup also features Nelson, Loretta Lynn, Hank Williams Jr., Kenny Chesney, Miranda Lambert, Dierks Bentley, Alison Krauss, Ronnie Dunn, Jamey Johnson, Kacey Musgraves, Lucinda Williams, John Anderson, Connie Smith and Bobby Bare. Expect more additions to the bill as the date approaches.
Don Was, country songwriter and producer Buddy Cannon and Haggard’s son Ben will serve as the evening’s music directors.
Tickets for the event go on sale this Friday, March 3, at 11 a.m. CT via Ticketmaster.com and Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 800-745-3000, and at the Bridgestone Arena box office. The concert will also be filmed and recorded for distribution as both a special and an album.
“I am so very thankful for this tribute to my husband,” says Merle’s widow, Theresa Haggard. “Please come join me and my family at this fantastic show that Merle would be so proud of.”
