New York officials said about 3.5 million spectators would turn out for the city's signature parade, in its 89th year. Jacqueline Williams, 52, of Atlanta, said the Nov. 13 Paris attacks in which 130 died were in the back of her mind as she attended the parade for the first time.

The third annual Holocaust survivors' beauty pageant, honoring women who lived through the concentration camps and death marches of Nazi Germany, was held in the city of Haifa this week with hundreds of relatives turning out in support. "Many of them were children, teenagers or young adults during the Holocaust," said Jurgen Buhler, the German director of the International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem, a sponsor.

Obama's plan to accept 10,000 refugees from Syria has drawn political criticism since attacks in Paris two weeks ago that killed 130 people, and which Islamic State claimed responsibility for. The United States is leading an international coalition fighting the group in Syria and Iraq.
